From the dangerous search for treasure
that may have been left behind by the
most successful pirate in history to
the discovery of valuable items that
could be traced back to one of the most
powerful dynasties in Chinese history,
here’s how Josh Gates found something
terrifying during Expedition Unknown.

I don’t know if you guys can
remember but when we were kids,
there were one or two pirates that filled
our adventurous fantasies as we wandered
what it would be like to be buccaneering
pirates who became the bane of the seven
seas. Some of us may have imagined
ourselves to be like Edward Teach,
a pirate whose reputation as a shrewd yet violent
pirate became so fearsome, it has become the stuff
of legend as the world remembers the frightening
legacy of the man we all know as Blackbeard.

Then there’s the likes of Henry Morgan,
one of the best known pirates of the buccaneering
era of piracy, especially after he ordered his men
to lock the inhabitants of Puerto Principe within
a church just so that he could plunder their town
without any interruptions. That is before
he went on to capture Portobelo, a region
in Panama, by creating a human shield made out of
priests. You actually can’t make this stuff up.

There’s even some lore about Captain William Kidd,
a once respected privateer who went rogue after
accepting an assignment to put down the curse of
piracy that was taking place in the Indian Ocean.
Heck, we can even point to the
immortalization of One-eyed Willy,
the legendary 17th Century pirate whose treasure
map wreaked havoc centuries after his death. Sure,
we may be talking about the fictional
character in the Goonies, but you may
see our point in that all these pirates
seemed to have received a ton of fanfare
without being half as successful as the most
successful pirates in the history of Pirating.

We’re talking about Henry Avery, a
pirate that became so successful,
he became known as the King of Pirates or
The Arch Pirate. Aside from making away
with the largest loot ever recorded
during the Golden Age of Piracy,
perhaps even the entire history of piracy,
Avery is one of the only pirates to escape
without ever being arrested or killed in battle.
This is quite interesting, especially as we
consider the fact that pirates didn’t really
have a long life expectancy. Again, it makes
us wonder how he isn’t necessarily part of the
lore that surrounds these notorious pirates.

Truth be told, Avery is regarded as
the most successful pirate in history
because of a heist that occurred on the 7th
of September 1695. This was when he and his
crew were able to pull off the largest theft in
maritime history by looting the Ganj-i-Sawai,
considered to be worth hundreds of millions of
dollars in today’s money. Apparently, this was
possible because this Mogul warship just happened
to be the wealthiest treasure ship in the world
at that time. As you can imagine, this should
have been enough to make him the most notorious
pirate in the history of the game, but for some
reason, nobody knows about him or his exploits.

It probably didn’t help that Avery
and his crew vanished off the face
of the Earth after they pulled off this
profitable heist. Or maybe it should have,
especially as historians and researchers
have been so puzzled by Avery’s activities,
it had added to the mystique of the tale.

Well, fortunately for us, Josh Gates and a group
of treasure hunters from the United Kingdom have
decided to take on this mysterious tale. Together,
they hope to explore the shores of the English
Coast by diving as deep as possible to see if they
could either find the treasure that may have been
stolen by this pirate or valuable clues in the
absence of treasure down there. To their delight,
they came across a graveyard of shipwrecks
that may give the team what they want.

Once they were down there, they quickly realized
that this was not going to be an easy walk in the
park, especially as they had to maneuver their
way through the many dangers that could be found
when one is wandering around in the deep. This
level of perseverance was probably due to the
fact that they were cheered by the prospects of
discovering the biggest loot in history. Maybe,
it was also because they had the state of the
art diving suits and equipment that helped
them endure the freezing waters that could be
found down there. Either way, it was clear that
nothing was going to stop them as they powered
through with their quest to find this treasure.

They also didn’t have any time to despair about
the conditions that they found themselves in as
they made their way through the water. This was
because they only had a limited amount of time
to remain down there due to the power tides that
swept through the waters at the Coast of Cornwall.
Fortunately for them, they were hoping to make
the most of a limited amount of time in which the
waters of the coast of Cornwall are calm and safe.
This phenomenon is what is known as Slack Tide.

Hoping to take full advantage of the time that
is available to them, the team decided that it
may be best to descend to the anchor chain
so that they could work as effectively as
possible if they were going to make the most
of their time in the water. This decision to
explore as much of the ocean as possible saw
them descend to the ocean floors. This proved
to be a great idea because this was when the
team came across a musket ball. Interesting…

This proved to be a catalyst as the team
eventually came across several fascinating
artifacts as they continued with their search. One
of these items proved to be more fascinating than
others, especially because of the story it told.
This was a dice that was found hidden underneath
the sands of the ocean floor. Now we all know why
these guys were able to find musket balls. Back
then, these guys must have been running riot on
all the ships that they came across in the seas so
it makes sense that we’d find some musketballs
and cannon balls at the bottom of the ocean.
The dice, however, told a different story. They
told us about how these pirates tried to while
away time as they made the sometimes boring
journey across the seven seas. Makes sense
that they probably gambled any of the spoils
that they were able to gather after looting
innocent bypassers. Who knows? They were
probably playing some board games as well.

Desperate to gather some more information
about these pirates, the team decided that
it’s probably best to continue pushing their
luck with the limited time that they had.
They had to go deeper into the ground. This
made them begin to move the sand around.
Although they had to make their way through
the dust clouds that the action created,
this led to the discovery of some very
interesting pieces of wood. Chances are
that they were pieces of wood that broke off
a ship during a shipwreck. As you can see,
this collection of discoveries was valuable to
the team because it was giving them the clues
that may lead them to the looted treasure of
Henry Avery and his crew of pillaging pirates.

Encouraged by the amount of clues that they
were finding, the team continued with their
cautious and precise approach to scanning the
seabed. Thanks to their metal detectors, they
were enthusiastic about finding some more clues
that could prove to be the final pieces of the
puzzle. This proved to be a great decision because
they eventually came across what could possibly
be a British Crown thanks to the size and the
possibility of silver that was found on the coin.

Thanks to the discovery of this British Crown, the
possibilities seemed to be endless for the team,
especially as it seemed to represent an even
larger and perhaps more significant discovery
somewhere underneath all that sand. Wary
about the limited amount of time that they
had down there as the Slack Tide was slowly
coming to an end, the team scurried around
hurriedly with their metal detectors and
other state-of-the-art equipment that they
had at their disposal. This eventually paid
off when the team came across another coin.

This coin was distinct from the British Crown
that was discovered earlier on, especially as it
had Arab markings on it and because it seemed to
resemble a coin that Josh and Don had found in the
area after taking their first dive into the water.
Looking at the Arab markings on the coin, the team
started to believe that Avery’s infamous loot
may have come from Saudi Arabia. Fascinating.

Following this highly productive diving
session, the team decided that it was
time to get out of the water, especially
as the Slack Tide may soon be coming to an
end. Now that they were out of the water, the
next step was to carry out an investigation
of all the items that they had retrieved
from the water. As you may have guessed,
the team was especially interested in the Arab
coin. Who could blame them? The potential seemed
