The island was uninhabited at the time, and as he explored, he stumbled upon a peculiar depression in the ground, about 12 feet across, which had a tackle block hanging from a nearby tree. Intrigued by the possibilities, he returned the next day with friends Tony V and Jack Smith to investigate further.

As they dug down about 10 feet, they hit a platform made of oak logs, and at every 10-foot interval, they found more logs. It quickly became apparent that someone had excavated this area before, as the clay walls were marked by pickaxes. However, as they continued, the digging became challenging and dangerous. Seeking help from the mainland proved difficult; locals were superstitious about the island, believing it to be haunted after two fishermen went missing while investigating mysterious lights.

In 1804, a wealthy man named Simeon Lanes joined the trio, forming a treasure company to delve deeper into the pit. They found layers of oak platforms every 10 feet, alongside coconut fiber, putty, charcoal, and even a stone with strange carvings. One cryptologist suggested the inscription might mean “10 feet below, 2 million pounds are buried.” Speculation began to swirl around the potential contents of the pit, from Captain Kidd’s treasure to the Ark of the Covenant.
